A local resident on the roof of his house destroyed in the Ukrainian army's artillery attacks on Donetsk's Oktyabrsky district. An atillery grenade exploded two hours prior to our arrival destroying parts of the building. Due to the proximity of the heavily embattled Donetsk airport (1-2 km distance) reidents in the area suffer heavily from shelling of Ukrainian army's artillery. Most residents fled the area only a couple stayed behind lacking relatives in other parts of the country or financial means or simply want to sit it out).

Sergey Zakharov is an artist from Donetsk who got known for his art installations depicting pro-Russian militants as devils and demons. Zakharov was arrested and tortured and held prisoner for six weeks by pro-Russian rebels in the summer of 2015. After his release he fled to Kiev not having seen his daughter since then. Zakharov works on a book, showing his ordeal in black and white drawings. His graffiti portrait of the prominent rebel commander Igor Strelkov holding a gun to his head under a caption riffing on the Nike slogan “Just Do It” became an instant symbol of opposition to the pro-Russian militias wreaking havoc in eastern Ukraine.

Jenakijive town has about 85.000 inhabitants and is located some 60 km from Donetsk city. The main employer in town is "Jenakijive Iron and Steel Works” (EMZ), where Yanukovych used to work as a mechanic. EMZ pollutes the city and surounding area heavily with black dust as a result of missing modern filter systems. The mentality in town seems to be in absolute favour of Yanukovych and in favour of a Soviet governing style.
